Send MMS Messages and Emojis

MMS lets you send images, videos, documents, and other media alongside text. Emojis are supported in both SMS and MMS, but they affect character encoding and segment counts.

Sending MMS

  1. Open a conversation in SMS/MMS.
  2. Click the attachment icon (paperclip) in the compose area.
  3. Select a file from your device.
  4. Add text if needed, then click Send.

Supported File Types

TypeFormats
ImagesJPG, PNG, GIF
VideoMP4, 3GP
DocumentsPDF, VCF

File Size Limits

  • Maximum file size: 5 MB per message.
  • Larger files may fail to deliver or be compressed by the carrier.

MMS Availability

  • MMS is available on US and Canadian numbers.
  • International numbers may not support MMS — check SMS Number Types for details.

Emojis and Character Encoding

Emojis trigger Unicode encoding, which reduces characters per SMS segment from 160 to 70.

EncodingCharacters per segment
GSM-7 (standard text)160
Unicode (with emojis)70

A single emoji in an otherwise GSM-7 message switches the entire message to Unicode. This can double your segment count and cost.

Tip: If cost matters, avoid emojis in long messages. For short messages (under 70 characters), emojis have no segment impact.
