SMS Guidelines for Australia
Sending SMS to Australian numbers requires compliance with ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) regulations.
Key Requirements
Consent
- Express consent is required for marketing messages.
- Inferred consent may apply for existing customer relationships (transactional messages).
- Keep records of how and when consent was obtained.
Sender Identification
- All commercial SMS must identify the sender (business name or phone number).
- Include your business name in the message body if using a number the recipient won't recognize.
Quiet Hours
- Do not send marketing messages on Sundays or public holidays.
- Do not send before 9 AM or after 8 PM in the recipient's local time (Monday–Saturday).
Opt-Out
- Every marketing message must include an opt-out mechanism.
- Honor opt-out requests within 5 business days.
- Maintain a suppression list of opted-out contacts.
Do Not Call Register
- Check the Australian Do Not Call Register before sending marketing messages.
- This applies to SMS as well as voice calls.
