EIN Requirement for 10DLC Registration
An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is mandatory for 10DLC brand registration, toll-free verification, STIR/SHAKEN, and CNAM registrations. This is a 9-digit number assigned by the IRS to identify your business.
What Qualifies as a Valid Tax ID
| Country | Accepted ID | Format |
|---|---|---|
| United States | EIN (Employer Identification Number) | 9 digits (XX-XXXXXXX) |
| Canada | Provincial Corporation Number | Varies by province |
| Europe | VIES VAT Number | Country prefix + digits |
| Australia | ABN (Australian Business Number) | 11 digits |
| United Kingdom | Company Registration Number | 8 digits |
DUNS numbers are not accepted for US registrations. TCR requires your IRS-assigned EIN.
How to Find Your EIN
- Check your IRS CP 575 confirmation letter (issued when your EIN was assigned).
- Look at previous tax returns — your EIN is printed on the first page.
- Call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 1-800-829-4933.
How to Apply for an EIN
If your business doesn't have an EIN yet:
- Go to irs.gov/ein.
- Complete the online application (takes about 10 minutes).
- You'll receive your EIN immediately upon completion.
Common Errors
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Tax ID not verified" | Business name doesn't match IRS records exactly | Use your legal name as it appears on your CP 575 letter |
| "Invalid Tax ID" | Entered a DUNS number instead of EIN | Replace with your 9-digit IRS EIN |
| "Verification failed" | EIN was recently issued and not yet in databases | Wait 2–3 weeks after EIN issuance, then retry |
