SMS Guidelines for New Zealand
Sending SMS to New Zealand numbers requires compliance with the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007.
Key Requirements
Consent
- Express consent is required for marketing messages.
- Implied consent exists for existing customer relationships with a reasonable expectation of contact.
Sender Identification
- All commercial messages must clearly identify the sender.
- Include your business name and a way to contact you.
Opt-Out
- Include a functional unsubscribe mechanism in every marketing message.
- Honor opt-out requests within 5 working days.
No Quiet Hours (Statutory)
New Zealand doesn't have statutory quiet hours, but sending during reasonable hours (9 AM–8 PM NZST) is best practice.
Sending to NZ Numbers
- New Zealand local numbers are available on JustCall.
- International long codes (e.g., US +1) may be filtered by NZ carriers — use a NZ local number for reliable delivery.
